Palaiokastro
(Old Fortress)
Ancient City
On the slope of the same hill with Panagia Spiliani is located Paliokastro, the ancient city from the 8th century bc which includes the impressive 4th century walls which are basically intact.
Old Fortress
Paliokastro is an ancient citadel located at the top of the hill above Mandraki. The castle was built around the 4th century BC, and its walls had descended to the sea. Today the most preserved place is the top of the fortress. It has thick walls of dark volcanic rocks, some of which are over 3 meters high. The place offers panoramic views to Mandraki and the Monastery of Panagia Spilliani.
